The History Behind Foss Fine Meats
Foss Locker Plant was started in the early 1940's by father and son, Mel and Gerry Foss. At that time the business was primarily frozen locker storage. The business grew and in 1960, Gerry sold the plant to Bill Thurston and two other long time employees, Jerry and Dick Laxton. The three known as LLT, ran the plant for the next 40 years - butchering and processing beef, pork, and venison. They also held the recipe for Foss' great hotdogs and bologna which we still make today. After 40 years, Bill, Jerry and Dick decided it was time to take it a little bit easier and sold the business to current owner Wayne Selbrede in March of 1999. As was true with Gerry and Mel Foss, Selbrede had very little experience in the meat cutting business, but had a long history in the cattle and farming business.
Dick retired when the business was sold and pursued other interests. Bill and Jerry stayed on for what was to be a transitional few months. We are thankful for the months that became years. We lost Bill in 2006 after a long battle with cancer but the knowledge of the business that he shared has been drawn on many times. Although Jerry has semi-retired and now works part-time, he too has shared his knowledge and experience and has been an integral part in the success of Foss Fine Meats today.
